The 7 Steps to Launch

Define scope and grade band

Choose grades 3–5 beginner or grades 6–8 intermediate. Pick a meeting time (before school, lunch, or after school).

Choose a CSTA-aligned curriculum

A guided, self-paced platform does the teaching. You facilitate — no CS background needed. Look for a published standards crosswalk.

Pick a COPPA-compliant platform

Must work on Chromebooks, require no installs, and have content-filtered AI. COPPA Safe Harbor certification is non-negotiable for under-13.

Set a 12-week schedule

45–60 minutes, once or twice weekly. Consistency beats length — a 45-minute weekly club that runs 12 weeks outperforms a 90-minute club that fizzles by week 6.

Secure funding

Start free to prove demand. Then submit a Title IV-A justification letter with enrollment numbers as evidence. PTA and local sponsorships also work.

Recruit 8–16 students

Simple signup emphasizing "no experience needed" and "build your first website in week one." Recruit across gender and skill levels.

Run week one as a build session

Goal: every student leaves with a working webpage. Students who build something in week one come back to week two. Students who get a lecture do not.

The 12-Week Curriculum Plan

Weeks 1–4

The Website

HTML tags, CSS styling, responsive layout, first interactivity. Every student has a styled personal website by week 4.

Weeks 5–8

Real Projects

Quiz game with scoring, "About Me" interactive site, digital greeting card. Each project is portfolio-ready and shareable.

Weeks 9–12

First Game

Full interactive game with scoring, timer, win/lose conditions. This milestone locks in long-term commitment for most students.
